Fats Oils And Grease

Fats, Oils & Grease can build up in sewer lines, causing sewer backups and overflows.

Sewer backups can cause health hazards, property damage and threats to the environment. Grease that is rinsed down kitchen sinks sticks to the inside of sewer pipes on private property and in the street. Over time, FOG builds up and eventually blocks the pipe. Grease dissolving products may alleviate build up near the drain, but that grease can end up somewhere down the line and cause a problem.

How to Prevent FOG in your pipes:

  • Never pour FOG down sink drains.
  • Scrape grease into a can or similar container and dispose in the trash.
  • Garbage disposals don’t keep grease from sticking to the pipes. Be sure to use strainers in sink drains to catch scraps and throw them away in a trash can.
  • Talk to your neighbors about FOG. Make sure everyone understands how one person’s fats, oils and grease put down the kitchen sink can cause problems for everyone in the neighborhood.
Restaurants and Commercial Facilities

If you have a grease trap or interceptor installed to keep grease out of the sewer system, remember that it must be cleaned frequently. Never put solid scraps into a grease trap or interceptor. Routine, even daily, maintenance is key to prevent sewer blockages. Remember that grease dissolving products simply pass grease down the pipes where it can still cause problems.
